Decorating a high shelf can seem like a challenge to some homeowners, especially depending on the location and size of the shelf. But this area can easily be decorated and used to display stylish accents as well as enhance the room. Foyers often feature high, built-in shelving or an upper window ledge that should be used, along with the rest of the room, to highlight the home's specific style and theme.

Paint

Use paint to enhance the high shelf area before placing decorative accents on it. Paint the shelf in a different but complementing color than the foyer walls to bring attention to it, or paint it the same color as the walls for a seamless look. For built-in shelving, paint all of the inner surfaces of the shelf area a neutral color, such as white, or select to only paint the back wall of the indented shelving for a dramatic look. Add ornate trim -- painted the same color as the existing trim in the foyer -- along the edges of the shelf area to further set it off.

Plants and Pots

Place a variety of plants on the shelf to add greenery to the area. Select a long, rectangular planter for a narrow shelf or several tall pieces of foliage to accent a high foyer ceiling. Select faux plants for easier maintenance -- eliminating the need to water and prune live plants -- but remember you will still need to dust the area often to prevent buildup. Or you can add a mixture of empty planters and decorative pots to bring color to the space without actual greenery.

Vases

Arrange decorative vases -- in different sizes, heights and shapes -- on the ledge to add interest. Choose clear, colored vases if the ledge is directly in front of a window so sunlight can shine through the vases during the day. Vases are a versatile option and can be tailored to complement a variety of themes, from vintage to country and even modern decor schemes. Use museum putty to hold fragile pieces in place in the event of an earthquake.

Art and Pictures

Use the foyer shelf to display decorative art pieces, such as a long metal piece of art or several sculptures. Place large items near the back or corners of the shelving, with smaller pieces near the front. Alternatively, you can arrange family photos on the shelf but remember to select large frames and up-close photos for best results because guests will have to look up at the photos to view them.

Baskets

Woven baskets -- in a variety of shapes and sizes -- can be used to decorate the shelf and also double as extra storage for small household items. Select opaque baskets or ones that feature lids so items inside are hidden from view. Only store items inside that are not frequently used as you will have to use a chair or ladder to reach them.
