How to Remove Turmeric Stains From Kitchen Counter

How to Remove Turmeric Stains

If you've ever cooked an Indian dish at home, you have probably used turmeric in the kitchen. This flavorful spice has also grown in popularity as a health supplement with people using it in teas and smoothies.

Does Turmeric Stain?

While it tastes delicious and adds luscious color to your food, turmeric stains pretty much on contact, whether you use it fresh or in its powdered form. For the best stain-removing results, you must act fast – treat turmeric stains as soon as you notice them.

Here's how to remove turmeric stains from clothes, counters, dishes and fabric …

Remove Turmeric Stains From Dishes

If running your dishes through the dishwasher doesn't remove the stain, it's time for plan B. Remove the turmeric stain with a solution of two-parts hot water and one-part bleach or vinegar. Let the dishes soak in the solution overnight. The stain should be gone by morning. This tip works for plastic, glass and ceramic dishes, blenders and food processor bowls.

With this tip you can get back to enjoying your chicken curry without worrying about the yellow-orange color is lingering on your plates and serving bowls.

Remove Turmeric Stains From Counters

It's easy to accidentally spill turmeric on the counter while making your favorite tea or recipe. If you notice the spill when it happens, wipe it up immediately! This might prevent a stain. However, if you don't notice the spill right away, a stubborn yellow or orange stain is probably staring back at you.

The best method to remove turmeric stains from the counter depends on what material it's made of. In most instances, a baking soda and water paste will work great. Apply it to the stain, let it sit for 15 minutes and then gently scrub with small, circular motions. If baking soda doesn't do the trick, try lemon juice or vinegar. Again, double-check that these cleaners are safe for your countertop material before using them.

How to Remove Turmeric Stains From Clothes and Other Fabrics

If you spill powdered turmeric or curry sauce on your shirt, treat it immediately.

For your best chance of removing a turmeric stain from clothes and fabric, here's what to do:

  1. Run cold water over the stain. If you can remove the clothing item, do so, and soak it in cold water with mild detergent for 20 minutes. As with all stains from organic sources, using hot water will only cause the stain to set.
  2. Wash the item. After soaking, wash the stained clothes as soon as possible in a cold-water cycle using regular laundry detergent. Line-dry in the sun to help the stain fade. If necessary, wash the clothing item one more time – the stain should go away completely.
  3. If you're at a restaurant, request a slice of lemon or lemon juice and apply it to the stain. Let the lemon juice work on the stain for 15 minutes before rinsing it with cold water. You can also set an ice cube on the stain if you're unable to rinse the clothing item thoroughly. Once you are home, wash the item, and refer to step 2 for tips.
